Frequently asked questions

1. What are the advantages of the LITTLE BIRD parent portal?

With LITTLE BIRD, you can submit space requests to childcare providers of your choice, even several at the same time. It does not matter whether there is currently available capacity. To submit a space request, you need a personal account, which requires one-time registration and login to the parent portal.

The number of possible childcare requests is limited to three facilities.

2. How can I use LITTLE BIRD?

LITTLE BIRD can be used at any time and conveniently from home or from your computer, smartphone, or tablet. The city of Neu-Ulm also offers a central contact point in the administration where you can get advice.

3. Why is the central allocation of places handled by LITTLE BIRD?

The parent portal is a modern, digital service provided by your local authority. You can conveniently view childcare options in your area from home, filter them according to criteria that are important to you, and apply for a place directly online. The city of Neu-Ulm also offers a central point of contact within the administration where you can seek advice.

4. Do I have to register to view the childcare options?

No. The LITTLE BIRD parent portal works like a search engine. You can search without registering and view the results in a list and on a map. You can also view the individual profiles with information about the respective providers and contact details.

5. Why do I need to create a personal account?

Registration and login are only necessary if you wish to submit a care request. Your personal account also gives you access to the following functions:

  • Save your search,
  • Bookmark facilities that meet your requirements,
  • Use the data for further care requests (only with your express consent)
  • and real-time status query for each individual care request.
6. I haven't received an activation email. What can I do?

You can have the activation email sent to you again. To do this, use the “Didn't receive your activation email?” function on the login page of the LITTLE BIRD parent portal. Either enter your registered email address again or have the activation email sent to a different email address – in this case, you will also need the password you used.

If you still cannot find the activation email in your inbox (or spam/junk mail folder), please contact our support team with your name, registered email address, and desired municipality.

PLEASE NOTE: Depending on your provider, it may take up to 10 minutes for the emails to arrive. Please also check your spam/junk mail folder!

7. I have forgotten my password. What should I do?

Please request a new password using the “Forgot password” function on the login page of the LITTLE BIRD parent portal. To do this, enter your username or your registered email address. For security reasons, you will then receive a message asking you to confirm that you need a new password. Once you have confirmed this, you will receive a temporary password that you can use to log in.

PLEASE NOTE: Depending on your provider, it may take up to 10 minutes for the emails to arrive. Please also check your spam/junk mail folder.

8. I am not receiving an email for a new password. What can I do?

Please also check your spam/junk mail folder. If you still cannot find an email to reset your password, please contact our support team with your name, registered email address, and desired municipality.

PLEASE NOTE: Depending on your provider, it may take up to 10 minutes for the emails to arrive. Please also check your spam/junk mail folder!

9. How can I delete my account?

If you want to delete your account, first log in to the LITTLE BIRD Portal. There, under “My Profile,” you can select “Delete Profile.”

PLEASE NOTE: If you delete your account, you will no longer be able to access any care requests you have already submitted, nor will you be able to view/track the status of these requests. It is not possible to link this to a new account.

10. How can I unsubscribe from the newsletter?

If you no longer wish to receive the LITTLE BIRD newsletter, first log in to LITTLE BIRD Portal. There, under “My Profile,” select “Change Personal Data.” Uncheck the box next to “Yes, I would like to receive the LITTLE BIRD newsletter” and save the change.

11. How can I submit a childcare request?

To submit a childcare request, you must create a personal account and log in with it.

Use various filters to search for childcare providers that suit your individual needs. Click on the “Create childcare request” button directly in the search results to access an online form. The fields marked with * must be filled in with the correct information. Then submit the childcare request. The city of Neu-Ulm will receive your information and be informed that you are interested in a place.

The city of Neu-Ulm also offers a central contact point in the administration where you can get advice.

Important to know:

  • If you check the box at the end of the data entry process to allow your data to be stored in the portal, this data will be available for further childcare requests. If you do not check this box, the data must be re-entered for each childcare request.
  • Registration is not possible without the relevant supporting documents.
12. What do I need to bear in mind when filling out the online forms in the parent portal?

Please ensure that you enter all data correctly. Fill in all fields marked with an asterisk (*). If an entry does not correspond to the specified format or an inconsistency is detected, the corresponding field will be marked in red and an exclamation mark will appear next to the field with further information for re-entering the data.

13. Why is the telephone number a mandatory field when requesting support?

If the issuing authority needs clarification regarding your support request, they can contact you using the telephone number you have provided.

14. Do I need to specify a second contractual partner?

Yes, if there are other legal guardians for the child for whom you have submitted a childcare request, they must be specified.

15. My address is not available for selection. What can I do?

Each municipality usually maintains a street directory from which you can select your address. However, this must be updated at regular intervals, for example, when new residential areas are developed.

Please contact the relevant representative in your municipality.

16. What does the “Priority” field mean in the childcare request?

If you are requesting childcare places from several childcare providers at the same time, you can specify priorities. Specifying priority “1” means that this childcare provider is your favorite.

17. Why can I only send a limited number of childcare requests?

Each municipality decides for itself whether or not to limit the number of childcare requests. LITTLE BIRD has no influence on this.

Once you have reached the maximum number of active childcare requests, you will not be able to send any further requests for the same child. If you receive a rejection or withdraw from a request yourself, you can of course create new childcare requests.

18. Do I have to re-enter all my data for each request?

If you check the box indicating that your data may be stored in the portal when you complete the data entry for your first support request, this data will be available for further support requests. If you do not check this box, the data must be re-entered for each support request.

19. I would like to change childcare providers. How do I do this?

If your child currently has a childcare place within your municipality or an existing childcare contract, you must mark your childcare request as a change request. To do this, click “yes” in the appropriate place.

Without a clearly marked change request, the request cannot be processed, as children who are covered by a childcare contract are not entitled to another childcare place and are therefore not allowed to have an active request.

20. How will I find out if I have been offered a place or if my application has been rejected?

As soon as a decision has been made regarding the allocation of places, you will receive notification by email or letter.

You will either receive notification that you have been offered a place at a daycare center or a rejection letter stating the reason (e.g., no capacity available).

Important to know: If you have submitted multiple childcare requests, you can only receive one daycare place. If you wish to accept the place offered, you must notify us within 1 month. If you wish to decline the place, you must submit a written objection (not by email) to the city of Neu-Ulm within 1 month.

21. How long will it take to receive a response from the city of Neu-Ulm?

The processing time for your childcare request(s), the time it takes to receive a response, the contact process, and the allocation of places are the responsibility of the childcare providers or the local authorities themselves. LITTLE BIRD has no influence on this.

If you would like to register your child for the new kindergarten year, the deadline for registration is always February 28 of the respective year. Decisions on the allocation of places will be made as quickly as possible.

You will be notified by the end of May each year at the latest whether you have a place for the new kindergarten year in September.

If you need a childcare place during the year, please also register on this portal. You will then receive a prompt response from the allocation office of the city of Neu-Ulm.

22. Why can I only receive one place offer?

The LITTLE BIRD management system creates equal opportunities by preventing some parents from receiving multiple place offers at the same time, while others go empty-handed or have to wait longer.

As soon as an offer is made in the system, the other requests are paused (inactive).

If you accept the place offer, the child is considered to be cared for. If the offer is rejected, all other requests are automatically reactivated (active).

23. Can a reservation be rejected?

Yes. A reservation is a non-binding request for childcare that is used to plan the expected space requirements in the facility. There is no legal claim to the pre-registered place vis-à-vis the provider or the facility.

24. What criteria are used to allocate places?

Places are allocated centrally and fairly by the allocation office of the city of Neu-Ulm. LITTLE BIRD has no influence on the allocation of places.

Individual criteria are not disclosed.

25. How can I change the data I have entered retrospectively (e.g., in the event of a move, the birth of a child, changes to the specified priorities, etc.)?

Unfortunately, it is not currently possible for you to change childcare requests that have already been submitted. The reason for this is that, for data protection reasons, as little data as possible is currently stored in the parent portal; instead, it is sent directly to the childcare facility and its administration system. However, we are already working on a secure solution.

Until then, change requests can only be made and stored directly via the administration of the city of Neu-Ulm. Please feel free to contact the city of Neu-Ulm for this purpose.

26. How can I place siblings/multiple children with the same childcare provider?

Please submit separate childcare requests for each child at your preferred facilities. You can indicate in the form for the respective childcare request that you are looking for childcare for several children with the same childcare provider.

If one of your children is already being cared for by the same childcare provider, you can also indicate this directly on the form for the respective childcare request.

27. Why do I still have to introduce myself in person?

The parent portal does not replace the personal meeting between the childcare provider and the family, but rather offers technical support. A personal introduction is absolutely necessary in the further process in order to identify you as a real person. You are considered “introduced” once you have provided a document confirming your identity. The respective facility will contact you to arrange a personal appointment for your introduction.

28. How can I contact the care providers personally or directly?

To contact a specific care provider, use the contact details provided in the respective portal profiles. If the profiles do not contain the information you require, please contact the city of Neu-Ulm.

29. What do I need to do to ensure that my child can attend the same childcare provider's kindergarten after nursery?

There is no automatic transition from nursery to kindergarten. Separate registrations must be made in Little Bird for both the nursery and the kindergarten.

30. The daycare portal is not available. What could be the reason for this?

The daycare portal is closed for new registrations every year from March 1 to April 15.

31. Is there a contact person for questions?
